Re: Pieter Visser's X350

As I will only do a single layer of 300gr bi-ax carbon covering over the rudder, I put some UD over the counter balance horn to add a bit of strength. Added a layer UD on the top over the counter balance horn extending onto the rudder and another layer on the bottom going onto the rudder leading edg...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

Removed the straight edge and peelply and sanded the area to apply another layer of UD. This trailing edge is going to be stiff when all is done ;) I use packaging tape to protect the trim tab from resin overflow, so it should be easy to clean up for final painting. One more UD after this one, smoot...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

Finally back to work on the rudder. After replacing the VStab fin skins with the carbon ones, I fit the rudder again to make sure of the fitment and the width at the counter balance horn. Thankfully this seems to be good. I did take of very thin layer of foam from the side still to be covered to com...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

Not much building going on, but moved the wings back to the dolly to free up space so I can start working on the rudder, H-stab, ailerons and flaps. This is mostly sheeting work, but I look forward to getting it done so I can start the assembly, after which my Whisper will really start to look like ...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

Wrapped the spar box, which completes this step of the wing build process :D 3 times around with 180mm by 2100mm 500gr UD finished with peel ply. My box cir-cum reference was about 68cm, so x3 and rounded to 210cm to ensure a bit of overlap. This was done after 4 layers 400gr bi-ax was put around th...

Useless bit of information, but just updated my build log and I've now spend 356 hours on my Whisper

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

D-day and the bottom section of the spar box is complete. All the remains is wrapping it in UD, as mentioned. No matter how well I plan and think things through, I often find that during a job something unforeseen (that maybe even could have been foreseen) crops up  As the spar planks were tri...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

I received my bi-ax and it is a very good product indeed, but then it is 3x more expensive than SA per meter  Saturday morning I'll cut the 4 layers needed to finish the spar box and do the layup :) Thought I'll share a picture of the cut UD, which is 500gr E-glass, but I'm not sure non-build...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

Due to pretty poor planning I am out of 410gr bi-ax :( Thought I had another roll somewhere, but it turned out not to be the case. Managed to order 400gr bi-ax here in NZ and should get it tomorrow, which is the day I have off before starting a new contract and I was planning to finish the top of th...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

Sanded and prepped the spar box bottom section, rounded the square edges and made sure to get a good fit on the plywood spacer. Then glued in the plywood spacer on a good bed of flox. Weighted it down using dive weights, which I've found very useful throughout the build and eventually some will be m...
