Re: Pieter Visser's X350

Why does there always have to be a really hard one and why does it always happen to be the last one? I thought getting the first wing out the spar box was hard, but heavens, number 2 was a dusi! Simply because with the first wing out, there is now no anchor for the jack to push against. I tried all ...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

Houston we have a problem... The wing spar stubs are such a close fit with the polystyrene spacers that I could not get the wings out of the spar box  I decided that brute force, tugging, pulling, pushing and all sorts is likely not going to get me anywhere (I tried ;)). So, I slept ove...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

Today I cut the 4 layers of 410gr bi-ax E-glass for the spar box. This is because I made the foam spacers yesterday and after I've covered them with packaging tape, I used flox to "bead" them into position in the spar box. As mentioned, the spar box I painfully set up on Monday. With a few hours of ...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

I managed to hurt my back when lifting the spar box with both wings attached, not a clever move  The result was a couple of very unproductive days and a couple of visits to the chiro. I did fit the wing tie down long nuts ;) Drilled the holes to 12.5mm and just deeper than the long nut so that...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

We turned the wings over so I can work on the lower part of the spar box. Cut the plywood load spreaders and glued them in with a good bed of flox to bed into. Checking the holes and areas for the aileron bell crank. Had lovely rain, but I could not sand the wing spar planks. Hopefully tomorrow and ...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

I got my wing bolt back today :D Started making the aileron bell crank bracket from the carbon & glass layup. I measured the holes from the back ridge at 79mm by pressing the layup flush with the wall and measuring from the wall. I then drilled this hole in the drill press (just bought one this week...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

Frustratingly, not much happening at the moment. I'm still waiting to get the wing bolt sorted. As I've put the new carbon V-stab fin skins on, I refitted the rudder and started trimming the skins to suit. I've placed an order for 0.25mm x 50mm Teflon (PTFE) tape (R2860.00) equivalent for 30m roll :...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

As I'm not working on the wings, I potted around with odds and ends, as I only had 1.5 hrs of time today and I actually wanted to do the aileron bell crank layups, but that will take at least 3 hrs I estimate. I rust proofed the 304 stainless bumper washer and small washer, which is used in the elev...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

I've encountered a problem with my LH wing bolt, which is stuck in the wing spar box... Now before anyone thinks this is a Epoxy in the wrong place issue, rest assured it is not :) I've removed the wing bolt from the wing box after the last layups were done, but while doing so, I noticed the nut see...

Re: Pieter Visser's X350

Today was d-day for the top part of the spar box and I am really happy to have completed this step. Took a little sanding and shaping to get the plywood and polystyrene to fit just right. Found the RH side polystyrene had a low spot, so added a bit of flox between 2 layers of UD to take up some of t...
