FLIP IN A P51 MUSTANG

Postby whisper » Sat May 21, 2011 8:30 pm

Today whilst sanding away at the Whisper X engine mount attach points I received a surprise call from Patrick Davidson inviting me for a flip in the P51....needless to say the sanding block was dropped...literally!!

A short while later we were blasting down the runway at Seaview before I could fully comprehend what I was actually flying in.....this machine must be right at the top of most pilot's wishlists...it certainly was on mine!

What struck me was the smoothness of the motor...almost turbine like...also the peculiar sensation that the prop and engine are separate.....because of the gearing the prop blades are still visible at idle yet the engine is already galloping along!

The sound, smell and roar of this machine is pure aviation masculinity.... :D

The fly by at PE at 350MPH was .....well...fast!!

Approach and landing at 125MPH into Seaview was made to look easy by Patrick...

The ever unassuming Davidsons act as though owning and running an airforce of exotic warbirds is "old hat" but obviously this takes buckets of passion, drive and hard work!!

It was a helluva experience

thanks Patrick
thanks Stu

I flew the photographer (Tod Burns) in one of Stew's Harvards for these pics....
Quite intimidating having these two beasts on your wingtip....guess it was even more intimidating when they were trying to shoot you out of the sky!

With the Harvard at 32" manifold pressure and in a shallow dive the two big birds could just hang in next to us (with some flap) :D

another flip yesterday...this time a lift back to PE from PA after dropping off a T28.....more time to take it all in.

The big radials are nice but it will take a lot to beat the sound and feel of that geared V12
