ZU - EID did her maiden flight on 23 November 2006. Everything went well, and she flies beautifully. Will keep you informed about future progress and the performence of the Rotex 912 ULS engin and its woodcomp inflight adjustable propeller.[/b]

CONGRATULATIONS JOHAN!!!!

Some stats:
Total number of Whisper serial numbers issued since Dec 2003: 46

Johan has built 2 of those 6 in a total of 15 months ably assisted by his friend Jannie de Kock. This is an energetic team!!

Climb rate at 4500 den.alt: one up (105kg) + 45liters fuel = 1050 ft/m
two up (215kg) = 45liters fuel = 750 ft min

Cruise 75 % power = 195 kmh (120 mph)

Performance figures

Postby whisper » Mon Dec 18, 2006 9:30 pm

Johan just sent through some data regarding cruise performance with the rotax 912s powered express:

5450 rpm 217 kph Top speed 19.5 liter per hour CHT 115

5000 rpm 210 kph. Cruise 16 liter per hour CHT 108

4500 rpm 180 KPH slow cruise 11 liter per hour CHT 103

This was done with gps averages in opposite directions so should be very accurate.

40 hrs completed

Postby whisper » Sat Dec 30, 2006 6:09 pm

Johan has just finished his 40 hr proving flights and has applied for his full authority to fly.
Performance as described by Johan....:

"" We installed a second GPS and did another max speed test flying cross wind both directions. Both GPS's agree to the following: Max true speed (GPS ground speed) straight and level 5500 rpm = 220 kph. Cruise speed 5000 rpm = 210 kph

Economic cruise 4500 rpm = 190-200kph.

This morning we flew for one hour with a rev setting of 4300 at 160-170 kph level and measured the fuel burn = 10 liters ""

Amongst other tests Johan also took the aircraft to 260km/h in a shallow dive.

Although expensive it seems that the Rotax 912s may be the ideal engine for builders needing this kind of performance. The Express with 912s also seems to be an ideal aircraft for a flight school with its wide speed range, economy and robust construction.

Johan and Jannie popped down to Saldanha (for breakfast I assume?).
Judging by the smiles they're enjoying the fruits of their labours!

Whisper express glide ratio

Postby Johan Nortje » Sun Jan 28, 2007 8:38 pm

I measure the glide ratio a few times and got different figures. I think a optimistic figure wil be between 21-1 to 24-1. During the proving flights I had to swiched off the engin just after take off due to a water pipe that came loose. I did a 180 turn, 400ft above ground level join left down wind and managed to do a safe landing without any power.
Cheers
Johan

ZU-Eid's new Trim

Postby Johan Nortje » Fri Aug 31, 2007 4:22 pm

Due to the fact that I have nothing to do during weekends, I desided to give ZU-EID a new look.
Attached ZU-EID. (Sorry Gary for coping your design) I chance your lightning strike to a "W" for Whisper.
