Been a looonng while, but I am very excited about the fact that my kit is loaded into a container and will soon be making its way to NZ, where I'll continue the build process :D :D

Well, it has been a very long road with lots of ups and downs, but finally we're setup in NZ and aim to stay in NZ. Lots to be said for the country and the people, which makes it that much easier to settle in, but there will always be a big part of my hart in SA and with our family and friends.

My Whisper kit is here and in good condition as far as I can tell. I've not seen anything broken as yet. We are renting a house, well really, a garage with a bit of a house added ;) My workshop is just about setup and I'll share some pictures in due course. I've received some parts from Spruce and have a great many things to get working on.

Trouble in NZ is that Ampreg 21 is not available here and the agent will not bring it in. There are good alternatives, but its not easy to order it, even when produced locally! Thus, getting to know the suppliers of the goods I'll be needing is going to take a bit of time too.

Long and the short, I'm back and will be building :D

Some workshop pics... Built a huge rack-shelf thing to put RC planes on and hang the bicycles from, as well as store Whisper parts and whatever else. Also built a "wing dolly" to make it easier to move things around in the garage as I'm mostly working by myself.

I am still waiting for my new epoxy to arrive. It is a NZ made product by Adhesive Technologies and I opted for ADR246TX which sounds like a really good product. These products were used to construct the America's Cup winning boat this year!!

In the interim, I started on the main wheels, lubing the Grove wheel bearings :) Baby steps I know, but I'm building up :D

The Grove doc with the wheels states a 90in-lb torque of the wheel bolts. My torque wrench may be out somewhat, but 90in-lb corresponds to basically 10nm and with this setting I managed to strip 2 of the 6 AN23 bolts and nuts! I checked the ones that did not strip and they are on the edge where they are starting to give way. Seems 90 is really on the upper edge of what this setup can handle. I've ordered AN23 SS bolts and SS nuts to replace these with, which should do a tad better, but I'm only going to go to 9nm on my wrench!

As I'm going to be using a new epoxy (ADR246 with TX addition to thicken it up a tad), I thought it best to not dive straight into the landing gear bay, but rather to fit a window sill longeron as a test piece to get familiar and comfortable with the new epoxy and to see how well it bonds to the Ampreg 21 layers.

I am quite satisfied with the result and believe it to be suitable and an excellent replacement for the Ampreg 21 resin. It gives around 20 minutes pot life (30 possibly) before it starts to gel. I find that on the parts it gives at least 30 minutes, but the high concentration in the mixing cup, enables it to generate more chemical heat and speeds up the gel process. It has a 24hr full cure cycle and heat is even better, but in NZ that is hard to find! Although my workshop does heat up nicely in the afternoon sun.

While removing the clamps and screws from the longeron, I've decided to clean up the sides of the landing gear box, as this item is nearing my to do list ;)

To make a level cut off the top edge of the landing gear box, I leveled the fuss and then put a laser level inside the fuss to draw a level line on the side of the box. After cutting the first one off, I could lift the laser 2mm and get another level line on the second side wall ;)

I'll do the right window sill longeron next and then the landing gear box final bit of work.

Been busy over the weekend and this week. Trimmed, sanded and bonded in the RH window sill longeron.
I started cleaning up and preparing the landing gear bulk heads for the final layup, but this is a much bigger task than it may seem. I've been sanding a LOT! The result is great, so I'm not complaining, but I do look forward to getting the layup completed.
I've also removed the RH vertical stab fin skin, as this will be replaced with a carbon part I had made. Christiaan at the Whisper Factory has been most accommodating and delivered excellent carbon fin skins! I should save around 800gr on the V-stab by doing this, which is nice considering the moment arm of the V-stab.
I'm at 208hrs of build time at this point ;)

Prepped the gear bulkhead for layup during the week and did the layup on the Saturday, as I knew it was going to be a Dusi! It was, 10 hrs of laying up and mixing glue. I was really tired, but happy to get to the end and I'm satisfied with the result. This gear bulkhead is the last of the real back break work Russell once told me, so for me it is downhill from here :D

I used 410gr bi-ax with the 500gr ud, so a few less layers, but a feat to get the bi-ax draped into all the corners. Still need to do the cleanup, but the pictures will give some idea!

I've had a visit from a friend of mine, who is building an Europa, while I was doing the layup. Nice to have someone for company and appreciating the work one is doing - Thanks Graeme ;)

A bit of useless info... I used around 2lt of resin doing this layup!
